Abstract

In a two-for-one twisting spindle in which the yarn is delivered from a stationary package upwardly through a yarn brake fitted axially to a hood surrounding the package, the yarn then moving downwardly in the opposite direction round the hood in the form of a balloon, radially entering the spindle rotor, and being delivered axially in the latter in a downward direction, the yarn brake exerts a force which increases with the yarn tension in the balloon as soon as the tension exceeds a given and adjustable value, thus ensuring that the yarn is taken off the package at an even rate which corresponds substantially to the take-up speed, and that the amplitude of the balloon is restricted, to such an extent that in, certain cases, the balloon-limiter may be dispensed with. The spindle proper (6, Fig. 1, not shown) is connected to a driving-wharve (7) and is mounted in bearings carried by a housing fixed to the spindle-rail (1) connected to the spindle is a conical rotor (9) upstanding axially from which is a support (11) for a cage (15) in which the package is arranged to be kept stationary magnetically. Carried by the cage is a hood (19) which terminates in a cylindrical part carrying the brake. The latter comprises a housing enclosing a cylinder (23, Fig. 2, not shown) with semi spherical ends resting on a lower seating (22) and supporting at its upper end, a ring (21) on a flange (25) carried by a tube (27) and slidable in the housing. The tube fits telescopingly into a yarn outlet tube (30) with a ring (31) and having a flange (29) also slidable in the housing. Between the two flanges is a spring (28), the tension of which can be adjusted by a cap (32) which bears on the upper flange. The yarn passes between the ends of the cylinder and its two seatings, and on leaving the outlet tube is deflected around the ring (31); when the tension beyond the ring rises, e.g. by an increase in the spindlespeed, above the value to which the brake has been adjusted, the upper tube is lowered and the tension of the spring is increased, so that the extent of the engagement between the cylinder and its seatings is also increased, thus braking the yarn. In operation, the yarn is drawn off the package, passes upwardly to the brake and downwardly, between the limiter and the hood, to an inwardly and downwardly extending tube (10) in the conical rotor, which tube leads into the spindle proper whence the yarn passes downwardly for collection.
