Abstract

1,078,304. Waveguides. LIGNES TELEGRAPHIQUES & TELEPHONIQUES. July 10, 1964 [Aug. 6, 1963], No. 28472/64. Heading H1W. In a waveguide for the propagation of the fundamental circular TE or TM mode a number of fine conductive wires are positioned in a dielectric tube along lines following zero components of the electric field of the desired mode TE or TM, whereby the other mode TM or TE is suppressed. The invention may be applied to a waveguide solely comprising a dielectric tube 8, Fig. 6, or rod, with or without a surrounding metallic shield 7. The guide shown is intended for the circular TM mode and includes fine circular wires 10, of e.g. copper, embedded in the high-permittivity tube 8 and in the low-permittivity spacers 9, the wires being effective to suppress the TE circular mode. In the case of a guide intended for the TE mode, radial or longitudinal wires are embedded in the dielectric tube for suppression of the TM mode. A similar guide (Fig. 7, not shown), propagates the so-called circular TM "dielectric mode " and, in addition to the circular TE mode, it is necessary to suppress the circular TM mode guided by the shield 7. This so-called " metallically-guided " mode has a longitudinal component which is non-zero at a radial position where the corresponding component of the desired dielectric mode is zero. Thus, a series of short, fine, longitudinal wires lying in a cylindrical surface of the required radius may be used to suppress the metallically-guided mode. These longitudinal wires (16, Fig. 7), may lie inside the wall of the dielectric tube 8. They may coincide with the circular wires 10, in which ease both sets of wires are replaced by a mesh. The wires may be located in the dielectric tube or rod by a process in which the tube or rod is extruded in layers, the wires being sandwiched between the extrusions. Radial wires may also be used for suppressing modes having a radial electric field component.
