Abstract

107,790. Shampay, P. J. July 5, 1916. Carpets, beating, brushing, and cleaning mechanically.-A machine for cleaning carpets by successively beating, dusting, scrubbing, scraping, rinsing, brushing, combing, and wiping, comprises a rotary drum 5, Fig. 3, on which the carpet A is carried through the machine, and separate compartments 9, 15, and 22 in which the cleaning operations are performed, the various rotary shafts being driven through chain, belt, and worm gearing from a main shaft provided with a clutch and brake. The carpet A is contained in a rack 14 in the compartment 9 and is passed over a grating 12 beneath a rotary beater 38 and clamped to the drum. A hood or cover 30 carrying the beater 38 is mounted on end arms 31 pivoted at 32 to the machine frame and provided with counterweights 33 so that the hood may be lifted for the insertion of the carpet and for inspection &c. purposes, the beater shaft being driven by chain gearing from a shaft coaxial with the pivots 32 of the hood. A rotary brush 10 removes the dust loosened by the beater, the dust being withdrawn by a fan &c. through a pipe at the bottom. The carpet is held to the surface of the drum while passing through the scrubbing compartment 15 and the rinsing and combing compartment 22 by a " cradle " formed of wires 60 connected to longitudinal bars 59, 63, 64, Figs. 3 and 9, adjustable on radial rods 54 suspended from a manually-adjustable bearing 50. 51 on the drum shaft 4. A pipe 20, Figs. 3 and 12, is mounted on the " cradle " and communicates by a flexible pipe 80, Fig. 1, with a. reservoir 78 containing a cleansing-fluid. The outlets 69, Fig. 12, in the pipe 20 are away from the surface of the carpet, and are normally closed by valves 72 on spring-pressed arms 73, but are opened when the arms are engaged by the passage of a carpet through the " cradle. " A manuallyoperated perforated slide inside the pipe 20 also controls all the openings simultaneously. The drum shaft 4 is vertically adjustable in slots in the machine frame, either by hand or by sprocket and screw-and-nut gearing from the main driving- shaft, and carries the " cradle " with it. Brushes 16, 17 rotating in opposite directions pick up the fluid from the bottom of the scrubbing-compartment 15. After the scrubbing operation, the carpet is subjected to the action of a toothed scraper 65, Figs. 3 and 9, and a yielding comb or wiper 66, carried by the longitudinal members 62, 63, for removing dirt, and is then sprayed with clean rinsing water from a pipe 25 having nozzles 27 adapted to give a series of overlapping sprays all in one plane. The carpet next passes over a brush 23 and wipers 67, 68, Figs. 3 and 9, which lay the nap evenly. If the carpet is too long to be carried through the machine by the drum, the machine is stopped and the carpet unclamped and nipped between rollers 179, 180. The clamping-means on the drum comprises an elastic tube 41<1>, Fig. 11, adapted to be forced out to nip the edge of the carpet by a spring-mounted bar 41 engaged by pivoted cams 43 operated simultaneously from one end of the machine. The various parts are driven from the shaft 24 of the brush 23, upon which is mounted a driving-pulley 84, Fig. 5, a clutch 85, and brake 83 put into engagement by a collar 89 and lever 92 according to the direction of movement of the lever, and a belt 108 for driving gearing for raising and lowering the drum. The tension of the belt 108 is maintained by an idle pulley 111 carried on a pivoted arm so as to move when the load is heavy and allow the belt to slip. The driving gear for the brushes 10, 16, and 17 and the beater is provided with clutches so that they may be put out of action while the drum is rotating.
