Abstract

Vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride polymer compositions contain, as a heat-stabilizer, up to 20% by weight of the polymer of a mercaptosilane (R)aSi(X)c(SR1)b wherein each R and R1 is an organic group bonded by a carbon atom to the Si and S atoms respectively; each X is a hydrogen, halogen or a pseudo-halogen atom; a and b are each 1, 2 or 3; c is 0, 1 or 2 and the sym of a, b and c is 4. The polymer may be a copolymer of vinyl chloride and/or vinylidene chloride with not more than 20% of vinyl acetate, styrene, methyl methacrylate or acrylonitrile. R is a hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon group, e.g. an alkyl, alkenyl, alkaryl or aryl group containing e.g. halogen, cyano, nitro or ether and/or ester substituents. R1 is similar to R or is a substituted hydrocarbon group containing a carboxyl ester substituent, e.g. -(CH2)xCO2R11 wherein R11 is an alkyl group and x is 1 to 4. Alternatively -SR1 is derived from a thiocarboxylic acid. Other stabilizers may be included in the composition, e.g. organic phosphites or thiophosphites; Ca, Cd, Ba, Pb, Zn and/or Sn salts of fatty acids; hindered phenols such as 2,6-di-tert.-butyl-4-methyl phenol and 2,6-di-tert.-butyl phenol; and organotin esters and/or mercaptides, e.g. dibutyltin di-iso-octyl thioglycollate. In the examples polyvinyl chloride is milled together with stearic acid and (1) n-butyl-tris(thiobenzoate) silane, (2) di n-butyl-bis(isooctylthioglycollate) silane, (3) di-n-butyl-mono(isooctylthioglycollate) silane, (4) vinyl-tris(isooctylthioglycollate) silane, (5) vinyl-bis(isooctylthioglycollate) chlorosilane, (6) dimethyl-mono-(isooctylthioglycollate) chlorosilane, (7) di-methyl-bis(isooctylthioglycollate) silane, (8) n-butyl-mono(isooctylthioglycollate) chlorosilane, (9) diphenyl-bis(isooctylthioglycollate) silane, (10) vinyl-tris(laurylmercapto) silane or (11) di-n-butyl-(laurylmercapto) silane to produce a hide.
