A machine for counting paper money comprises a plurality of bill receiving compartments (8), Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), separate bill feeding means (10), (11) and a piece counter (26) associated with each compartment, a totalizing counter (32) common to all compartments, a piece counter circuit, Fig. 7 (not shown) for each compartment closable by separation of the bill feeding means and a totalizer counter circuit closable by operation of any of the piece counters, means to stop the bill feeding means (10), (11) upon the occurrence of any one or more of three conditions: (A) insertion of plural bills simultaneously into the bill feeding means, (B) any piece-counter reaching a predetermined count, (C) the totalizer-counter reaching a predetermined count; separate means to restart the means to drive the bill feeding means (10), (11) after stopping upon the occurrence of any of the three conditions, and means interlocking the separate restarting means to require operation of the restarting means in a predetermined order upon the simultaneous occurrence of more than one of the three conditions. As illustrated in Fig. 7, a plural bill circuit includes a relay coil (129) which when energized by the closing of micro-switch (27), Figs. 3 and 7 (not shown), causes contacts (80), (81) in the motor circuit to open and contacts (80), (87) in the brake circuit to close. A circuit is also established to a light signal (134) to indicate the presence of a double or plural bill. Similarly, a compartment predetermined count circuit and a totalizer predetermined count circuit have relay contacts in the motor circuit operable to stop the motor and light respective signals (40), (94). In the event of two or three of said conditions occurring simultaneously, signal (134) will light and have to be corrected before either signals (94) or (40) are allowed to light. Similarly signal (40) will light and have to be corrected before signal (94) lights thus assuring of a predetermined order for restarting. Within each compartment (8) there is a pair of hinged shelves (29) which may be opened to dump the contents of the compartments into lower sections of the compartments. A separator, Fig. 6 (not shown) may be used to separate stacks of bills and in the embodiment is used to operate switch button (39).
