Abstract

A reactor, of the pressurized water coolant moderator type, utilizing forced flow cooling of the core includes a reactivity control system which is responsive to a pressure differential across a section of the coolant circuit; a Venturi is connected in parallel with a part of the coolant circuit and a connection is made between the Venturi throat and the control system. The system includes a piston, one side of which is exposed to the Venturi pressure and to a spring pressure, both urging the associated rod to a shutdown position, and the other side of which is exposed, e.g. to the pressure in the control chamber, i.e. immediately downstream of the core outlet face. Heat exchangers are mounted in the pressure vessel between it and the core circumference, and a plurality of Venturi tubes are mounted in parallel with the heat exchangers, each operating a separate control rod. Some of the control rods effect shutdown, and others have regulating mechanisms for effecting a graduated control. The Venturi tubes may alternatively be connected in parallel across the circulating pumps.
