Abstract

The invention comprises polymers consisting of polyacetal ether units obtained by polymerizing a vinyl-1,3-dioxane or dioxolane having a hydroxyl group and having the formula <FORM:1076964/C3/1> where n is 1 or 2, m is 0 or an integer and R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl radicals which may be substituted by halogen atoms or ester groups. The monomers are polymerized with or without a solvent using a catalyst which is a sulphonic acid or derivative thereof, a sulphonate, sulphuric acid or a derivative thereof, a sulphate, a pyrosulphate, or a Lewis acid. In examples polymers are obtained from 2-vinyl-1,3-dioxane-4-carbinol, 2-vinyl-1,3-dioxane-5-methyl-5-carbinol and 2-vinyl-1,3-dioxane-5-ol, using as catalysts p-toluene sulphonic acid, methyl benzene sulphonate, ethyl m-nitrobenzene sulphonate, o-sulphobenzoic acid, p-toluene sulphonic acid anhydride, sodium hydrosulphate, potassium pyrosulphate, ammonium hydrosulphate, dimethyl aniline salt of pyrosulphuric acid, dimethyl sulphate, dimethyl pyrosulphuric acid, lauryl sodium sulphate, ethyl sulphuric acid, benzene sulphuric acid anhydride, boron fluoride etherate, titanium tetrachloride and tin tetrachloride.
