Abstract

Linear copolyesters are obtained by copolymerizing in the presence of a catalyst terephthalic acid or an ester-forming derivative thereof with a glycol and a lactone having a 5-7 membered ring or a polylactone or polylactonediol derived therefrom. The latter are preferably of molecular weight 1000-7000. The lactone units should amount to 1-50 mole per cent of the terephthalate units. Suitable lactones are g -butyrolactone, d -valerolactone, e -caprolactone and 7-methyl-e -caprolactone. The polylactonediols may be obtained by condensing a lactone with a diol, e.g. ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butane-1,2-diol, hexamethylene diol, cyclohexane dimethanol, diethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, or di(b -hydroxyethyl) terephthalate. In examples e -caprolactone, g -butyrolactone and d -valerolactone are copolymerized with dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol or cyclohexane dimethanol or with bis-hydroxyethyl terephthalate, and poly-e -caprolactone or poly-e -caprolactonediol (from ethylene glycol) is copolymerized with dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol or a low polymer therefrom derived.
