Abstract

A filling for a tooth cavity is prepared by pressing physiologically inert polymeric synthetic resins in the form of granules or particles, sufficiently small in size to be coalesced by pressure, to form a solid coherent mass and further consolidating the mass into a coherent homogeneous body. The resin particles may include fibrous portions. Specified resins are polymers of ethylene and substituted ethylene, particularly polyethylene, polystyrene, polyisobutylene, polyvinyl chloride, polytetrafluoroethylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylene, polyacrylonitrile, polymethyl methacrylate, polymethyl acrylate; and polyamides, polyesters, polycarbonates, cellulose derivatives, phenoplasts and melamine resins. The resins may be used in admixture, or mixed with fillers and pigments.ALSO:In a method of producing a filling for a tooth cavity physiologically inert polymeric synthetic resin in the form of granules or particles sufficiently small to be coalesced by pressure is formed by pressure into a solid coherent mass and is converted by further consolidation into a coherent homogeneous body. Pressure may be applied by conventional dental instruments, mechanically driven vibrators or ultrasonic apparatus. The resin particles are coalesced by light pressure to form a pellet which is introduced into the cavity and further consolidated. The resin may be mixed with other resins, fillers such as calcium hydroxide and medicaments, and the method may be used in the preparation of linings, and temporary and permanent fillings. Specified resins are polyethylene, polystyrene, polyisobutylene, polyvinyl chloride, polytetrafluoroethylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylene, polyacrylonitrile, polymethyl methacrylate, polymethyl acrylate, polyamides, polyesters, polycarbonates, cellulose derivatives, phenoplasts and melamine resins.
