Number-printing apparatus.-For printing numbers on a web W of stamps S, two drums 24, 26 are provided, each carrying a plurality of rows of numbering units 36, each row having an actuating lever 44 carrying a roller 50, which rollers run in circular tracks 60 in cams 62, 64. One row on each drum has no lever 44 and is geared to an adjacent row. The same numbers are thus printed on each row of stamps. After a given number of revolutions of the drum 26, a micro-switch (252), Fig. 3, actuated on each revolution by an arm 160 engaged by a knob 168 on a disc 172 rotating with the drum, actuates a counter (154) which operates a solenoid-actuated valve (V) controlling an air cylinder (190) to actuate a linkage system, Figs. 1-4 or 12-16, to release a shaft 110 for rotation through a fixed angle, whereupon links 112, 114 pivot cam diverted elements (68), Fig. 5, to change the effective shape of the track 60 by prolating them at 78. Each roller 50 in turn then swings to move the units in its row to the next number. Alternate rows of stamps are printed by the units on the two drums, and the prolations 78 are angularly staggered accordingly.
