Abstract
1,075,973. Turbines; axial flow compressors. LA FLEUR CORPORATION. April 8, 1965, No. 14861/65. Headings F1C and F1T. A plant consisting of a compressor 26 supplying a hot gas turbine 28 coupled to a cold gas turbine 39 has circumferentially unsplit outer casings 11, 12 with joining flanges 13, 14. Casing 11 has a tapered bore 61, 62 such that the complete unit of compressor and hot turbine rotors 81, 82 with their respective stators 58, 43 can be assembled axially into casing 11 past flange 13. Casing 12 has a similar tapered bore 63 such that the casing can be assembled axially over the cold turbine stator 64 before flanges 13, 14 are bolted together. The casing bores may alternatively be stepped cylindrical surfaces or combinations of conical and cylindrical surfaces. Sealing rings 66 to 74 are positioned between the stators and the casings 11, 12. Splined couplings 101, 102 connect adjacent rotor shafts. Bearings 91, 92, 94, 95 and 97 support the rotors. The outer ends of the compressor and cold turbine rotor shafts are contained in blind chambers 110, 111 respectively, to reduce gas leakage to atmosphere. Chamber 110 also contains a hydraulic starting motor and a clutch 17. Chambers 106, 109 within casing 11 form lubricating oil sumps receiving oil drain from chambers 103, 107, respectively, between adjacent rotors. The working gas, which may be helium or hydrogen, enters the compressor 26 from annular chamber 23 after passing through tangential inlets 21A, 21B, and leaves through annular passage 27. The hot and cold turbines receive gas through inlets 29, 36 respectively.
