Abstract

107,582. Asbury, D. F. June 13, 1916, [Convention date]. Ordnance breech mechanism.-Relates to the screw type having a carrier swing- ing about a horizontal transverse axis, and consists in providing a spring acting between the carrier and the gun to counterbalance the moment due to the weight of the breech mechanism. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the spring 18 is housed in a cylindrical cavity 10 in the breech screw carrier C and exerts at its top end a force producing a constant closing moment about the axis c of the carrier. At the bottom end, the spring abuts against a piston 15, fitted with anti-friction rollers 17 engaging the wall of the cavity 10, and connected by a swinging link 21 with a fixed bracket 20 on the gun. The spring due to the thrust of the link 21 therefore exerts at its bottom end a resultant force on the carrier in a plane through the rollers 17 at right-angles to the axis of the spring. This force acts during the first part of the opening movement to produce a closing moment which gradually diminishes to zero, after which an opening moment is exerted. The resultant moment exerted on the carrier by both ends of the spring serves to counterbalance the moment due to the weight of the breech mechanism. A handle 14 facilitates manual operation of the carrier. Fig. 5 shows the invention applied to breech mechanism fitted with an air pressure piston-and-cylinder device 25', 22 for closing the carrier, the air under pressure being supplied through the hollow pistonrod by a flexible pipe 29. Specification 101,716 is referred to,
