Abstract
1,075,692. Feeding webs. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Feb. 24, 1964 [March 12, 1963], No. 9655/63. Heading B6B. In apparatus for impregnating continuous lengths of tyre cord fabric with rubber, the rubber fabric passes from a braked web-roll 15, Fig. 1, over guide rollers to a series of braked tension rollers 3, over tension sensing roller 7, through a dipping tank 1 containing a rubber latex solution, over excess dip removal units 12, through a drying tower 9, through a series of feed rollers 2, and over guide rollers to a motor driven take-up roll 52. The four rollers 19 and 20 comprising the series of tension rollers have gears 22, Fig. 3 (not shown), which intermesh with a common gear 23 attached to a shaft 23a. The shaft 23a is connected through a reduction gear 32 to a shaft 31, Fig. 2, which is attached to one side of an electromagnetic slip clutch 29. The other side of the clutch is attached to an electric standstill tension motor 36 through a reduction gear 37. The motor 36 tends to rotate the rollers 19 and 20 in opposite directions to the web feed. A supplementary driving motor 38, Fig. 4 (not shown) of the A.C. squirrel cage type is connected by an endless belt to a pulley wheel 41 attached to the shaft 31, Fig. 2. This supplementary motor is used to overcome any residual tension produced in the fabric when the feed commences by driving the rollers 19 and 20 in the direction of feed. The series of feed rollers 2 is driven by a main drive motor (not illustrated) through a series of mesh gears similar to those of the tension rollers. In operation when the feed of the fabric has commenced at a set speed, should the tension roller 7 detect an excess of tension, either a warning light is operated so that the operator can make the necessary adjustment to the clutch 29, or an electric circuit (not illustrated) adjusts the clutch 29 automatically. Two indicating rolls 6 which emit electrical impulses for a certain length of feed, are provided to determine the percentage increase in length of the web due to stretching. When the feed is stopped, a roller 26, Fig. 3 (not shown), supported by a pair of levers 27 is urged against one of the tension rollers 19. The reverse torque applied to the roller 19 by the motor 36 therefore tensions the web when it is stopped during the web-roll change. A roller 48a similar to the roller 26 is also urged against one of the feed rollers 48. In a modified apparatus, either or both supply and take-up sections may be provided with festooning apparatus to accumulate web for changing the web-roll. Each excess dip removal unit 12 comprises a box extending across the fabric and an opening 45 across which the web passes. Each box is continually evacuated through a ducting (not illustrated) by a fan 46 to draw the excess fluid from the fabric web. The drying tower is supplied with hot air from a blower 10 and the fabric web passes through a drying unit 13 of conventional construction.
