Abstract
1,075,669. Shearing. REYNOLDS METALS CO. Sept. 25, 1964, No. 39254/64. Heading B3W. [Also in Division B4] Apparatus for cutting axially advancing tubular stock 22, Fig. 1, into individual tube elements 21 comprises means for orbiting cutting means 105, Fig. 5, round the stock 22 and means for rotating a non-reciprocating rotary member 65 round the stock 22 coaxially with the cutting means, the member 65 being adapted to advance the cutting means axially with the stock 22 and to move the cutting means radially inwards to cut the stock while advancing therewith. The cutting means is carried by a rotatable member 98, Fig. 4, which is axially reciprocable by means of a cam track 69 carried by the member 65. Mounted in a slot 70 in the member 65 is a spring-influenced cam-plate 71 which is movable radially inwardly by means of rollers 82 engaging the outer surface 76 of the member 65, the rollers being rotatably carried by a bracket 79 connected to the piston 86 of an hydraulic cylinder 85. Each cutting means 105 comprises a blade 108 carried by a pivotallymounted arm 106 having a gear portion 112 engaging a ring gear 113 which is also engaged by a pinion gear 114 carried by an arm 116 provided with a roller 117 engaging the inner surface 74 of the member 65. When the roller 117 engages the moved-in cam-plate 71, the gear 114 is rotated counter-clockwise to cause counter-clockwise rotation of the gear 113 relative to the clockwise driven rotation of the member 98 to cause the arms 106 to pivot counter-clockwise and move the blades 108 inwardly to cut the stock. When the roller 117 moves beyond the cam-plate 71, the gear 114 is rotated clockwise to cause clockwise rotation of the gear 113 which causes the arms 106 to pivot clockwise and pull the blades 108 away from the stock. With the blades withdrawn from the stock, the cam track 69 reverses the direction of axial movement of the member 98 and returns it to the right-hand terminal position while allowing the stock to move to the left. In the form shown, the apparatus cuts axially advancing and rotating tubular container body stock that is being continuously formed by helically winding strips of container material on a mandrel. The apparatus may, however, be used for cutting non-rotating tubular stock, e.g. tubes of paper, metal or plastic. The cutting blades may be conventional razor blades, or can be rotatably mounted on the arms 106.
