Abstract

Monophenyl ethers (I) of ethylene glycol are prepared by reacting diphenyliodonium salts (II) with ethylene glycol; diphenyl ethers of ethylene glycol are prepared by reacting II with I. The diphenyl ethers which are p-alkyl substituted may be oxidized to the di-(p-carboxyphenyl) ether. The preparation of the mono- and di-p-tolyl ethers is exemplified; the di-p-tolyl ether of diethylene glycol is a by-product.
