Abstract

A method of sintering a metallic ore comprises the steps of sintering a mixture comprising the ore and return material on a sinter machine, removing the sinter from the machine and breaking the sinter, screening the sinter to provide a first fraction having a grain size above a given value, e.g. 8 mm., and a second fraction having a grain size below this given value, returning the second fraction for admixture with the ore and subjecting only a portion of the first fraction to mechanical attrition to provide a further quantity of return material for admixture with the ore. In a preferred embodiment a portion of the first fraction outside a prescribed range of grain sizes, e.g. 10-30 mm. or 15-25 mm. is wholly or partly processed for the recovery of returns. According to an example a middle fraction of 15-25 mm. grain size is screened off as product and that below 8 mm. as returns, the 8-15 mm. and over 25 mm. fractions being submitted to mechanical attrition to reduce all to below 25 mm. The resulting under 8 mm. and 15-25 mm. fractions are classified as above and the remaining sinter is all reduced to under 8 mm. for additional returns. In a further example a portion of the total sinter above 8 mm. is submitted to destructive attrition to produce returns without the removal of a middle cut.
