In a copying apparatus of the type in which an image transfer is effected between a matrix and a copy sheet pressed together between heated rollers, the rollers are housed in an insulated enclosure which is maintained within a desired temperature range. Fig. 2 shows the arrangement with the two rollers 12 and 18 in contact at the right hand side, but in an "exploded" view at the left hand side. Roller 12 is fixed in position, but roller 18 can be moved towards or away from roller 12, the degree of pressure between them when they are in contact being adjustable by altering the tension of a spring 24. The whole apparatus is built up on a base which forms part of an outer casing. The juxtaposed matrix and copy sheets 30 are fed in through a duct bounded by plates 31, 32, and guided up between rollers 12, 18 to pass out of the machine through guide 33. An L-shaped cover member 38 co-operates with a frame part of the outer casing to form an enclosure for the rollers, this enclosure being blanketed with a layer 43 of insulating material. The enclosure is heated by means of an electrical heating element 42, controlled by a thermostat whose probe 44 is mounted adjacent the lower guide plate 32, so that it is responsive to the cooler sheets as they are fed into the machine, the temperature thus being regulated up to the desired level again before the sheets reach the pressure rollers. Roller 18 is retracted out of engagement with roller 12 when the machine is not in operation, to avoid the formation of "flats" on the rollers. This is effected electromechanically by an arrangement of cams and switches. When the apparatus is switched on, roller 18 is automatically brought into contact with roller 12, and when the apparatus is switched off again, roller 18 is automatically retracted again.
