Abstract
1,074,335. Hygrometric elements. BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd. Jan. 20, 1966 [Oct. 21, 1964], No.42894/64. Heading G1S. A hygrometric element comprises a sheet or strip of animal skin, paper, hair, plastic or like material which changes its physical dimension with changes in humidity the strip being treated with a salt such as lithium chloride having a large change in water content for a relatively small change of ambient humidity. The salts may be applied by immersion or spraying to give a large change in dimension per percentage change in humidity. Other examples of a salt used are sodium chloride and ammonium chloride. The hygroscopic salt may be mixed with a binder such as gelatine or polyvinyl alcohol so that the salt remains in the element even when the humidity is high.
