Abstract
A process for producing an N-monocyclic hydrocarbon substituted cyclohexylamine having 6 carbon atoms in the cyclic portion of the monocyclic hydrocarbon comprises reacting a nitrohaloaromatic compound having the formula <FORM:1074247/C2/1> where X = chlorine or bromine, n = 1-3 and R = H or a C1- 3 alkyl group with hydrogen at a temperature in the range from 30 DEG to 250 DEG C. at a pressure in the range from 2 to 200 atmospheres and in the presence of a catalyst comprising a noble metal of the platinum group and a solvent selected from the aliphatic carboxylic acids having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms per molecule, benzyl alcohol and the aliphatic alcohols having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms and recovering an N-monocyclic hydrocarbon-substituted cyclohexylamine from the resultant reaction mixture. In typical processes N-cyclohexylaniline is obtained by reacting o-nitrochlorobenzene with hydrogen in the presence of a palladium-on-charcoal catalyst and glacial acetic acid and dicyclohexylamine together with cyclohexylamine is obtained by reacting p-nitrochlorobenzene with hydrogen in the presence of a platinum on alumina catalyst and ethyl alcohol. Many additional starting materials, catalysts and solvents are specified. Examples are furnished.
