Abstract

In chart position indicating apparatus for use with a radio navigation system providing signals representing at least one co-ordinate of position of a mobile craft, and having a chart in the form of a strip carried on two spools so as to be movable to and fro in one direction relative to an index, a direct current motor is provided for driving the spools and this motor is energized by a succession of pulses, whose mark to space ratio is variable i.e. it can be one of two fixed values, depending on the required speed of movement of the chart, the pulse repetition frequency being substantially greater than the dominant mechanised resonant frequency of the spools and chart, which is to some extent resilient, so that the chart is moved substantially continuously by the motor. The chart and spool arrangement is as described in Specification 1,073,991 the chart strip having at one edge a plurality of digitally coded tracks of opaque markings, the apparatus being provided with a photo-electric detection system allowing the actual position of the chart to be compared with the craft position as detected by the radio navigation system, preferably a hyperbolic navigation system. The system of chart and spools when driven by a pulsed motor has a certain resonant frequency and if the pulse frequency corresponds closely to this frequency the chart will oscillate to and fro. The pulse frequency is thus increased to prevent this effect and the mark to space ratio of the pulses can have one of two fixed values depending on the desired drive rate for the chart. The motor may also be driven continuously if a coarse adjustment of the chart is required. The system operates automatically from the signals received from the radio navigation system and arrangements are described whereby the chart is driven at the correct speed and is positioned correctly so that the index indicates the craft position in the coordinate direction represented by the chart movement. A transistor switching bridge circuit is also provided to prevent overshoot of the motor drive between the pulses.
