Fluid-operated tool or bed; rotating-tool apparatus.-In a machine for treating hides, skins, and leather, fluid operated means are provided for bodily moving the work-supporting bed to the operating tool, or vice versa, whereby response can be made to inequalities in the thickness of the work. In one form of apparatus, the bed consists of a roll a mounted on two swing arms 10 and adapted to be raised by fluid pressure to the position shown in Fig. 2, when it is in geared connexion with a bladed cylinder b, or to fall away therefrom by its own weight. The fluidpressure device comprises, at each end of the roll, a cylinder 16 to which air can be admitted from a reservoir 19 by the operation of a pedal 27 to force a piston 15 outwardly and so raise the roll a by a connecting piston-rod 17 and links 18. An adjustable cushioning means to prevent jarring of the gearing 31 of the roll a on meeting that of the cylinder b may be provided in the form of a spring-held valve 37 in the end 35 of the cylinder 16, which valve admits air into that end of the cylinder on the roll a falling into the disengaged position. When the roll a is returned, this air is compressed, forming a cushion, and is allowed to escape through an adjustable relief valve 42. Feed-rolls operated by gearing 32, 33 are provided, andan air pump 51 for keeping up the pressure in the reservoir 19 may be fitted.
