Abstract

1,072,597. Electrostatic storage, recording and playback. R. LUBOW. Sept. 7, 1965, No. 38131/65. Headings G4C and G5R. In an electrostatic storage system in which a dielectric surface is successively passed under a writing and reading electrode, a thin film of semi-conductive lubricating liquid is applied to said surface prior to passing under said electrodes. As shown (Fig. 1) a cylinder 16 having a dielectric surface 20 on a conductive backing 18 is rotatably mounted in a housing 14 through which write and read electrodes 26, 28 (which may be of conducting rubber) respectively project. The cylinder dips into a pool of semi-conductive lubricating liquid 30, for example a polyalkylene oxide derivative in alcohol, a mixture of alcohol and distilled water or a petroleum oil mixed with a detergent. A wiper 32 is provided. The dielectric surface and conductive backing may be formed of anodized aluminium. The dielectric surface may be formed in the shape of a planar disc or a tape. Other means of applying a thin film of liquid may be used, e.g. a wick soaked with the liquid.
