Abstract

In apparatus for measuring the optical transmissivity of test samples having means for periodically resetting the calibration an indication is given if the resetting means is moved beyond a certain point. In one embodiment light from a source 5 is directed through a vessel 9 to a photoelectric detector 10 coupled to a meter 13. The lamp is energized through a voltage stabilizer 1 and the arm 8 of an adjustable potentiometer 4. To calibrate the apparatus the vessel 9 is filled with distilled water and the potentiometer adjusted until the meter reads zero absorption. Replacement of the water by the test sample or series of samples then enables absorption measurements to be made. Due to the ageing of the lamp and detector or the dirtying of the surfaces of the test vessel, the voltage it is necessary to apply to the lamp at successive calibration operations gradually increases until it reaches a point at which the apparatus readings are no longer reliable and other action has to be taken. To indicate when this point has been reached the arm 8 of the potentiometer is arranged to then close the circuit of a warning light 15. Arrangements may also be made to indicate when variations in the voltage stabilizer output occur. Instead of varying the source intensity the source may be supplied with a constant voltage and calibration adjustment effected by the use of an iris diaphragm or grey wedge. The attenuator control being arranged to give an excessive adjustment indication in one of the ways mentioned.
