Abstract

Polymers may be produced by reacting the hydroxyl groups in a compound of formula <FORM:1072161/C3/1> in which Hal is halogen and R is a saturated or unsaturated alkylene, cycloalkylene, alkoxyalkylene or hydroxyalkylene radical of 2-6 carbon atoms or an aralkylene radical with a difunctional reactant in an inert solvent. The dihydroxy compound may be a bis(b -trihalogeno - a - hydroxy - ethoxy) hexane, e.g. bis(b - trichlor - a - hydroxy - ethoxy) hexane. The difunctional reactant may be an aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acid or an amide ester or chloride thereof, an alkylene bis(halogeno carbonic ester), phosgene or an aliphatic or aromatic diisocyanate. Examples of suitable compounds are: acids having 2-16 carbon atoms, e.g. adipic acid, terephthalic acids, adipyl chloride, terephthalyl chloride and naphthalene-1,5-dicarboxylyl chloride, butane-1,4-bis(chlorocarbonic ester), hexane-1,6-diisocyanate, tolylene - 2,6 - or 2,4 - diisocyanate and naphthalene-1,5-diisocyanate. The reaction may be carried out in an inert solvent in the presence of a dehydrating or dehydrohalogenating agent. Solvents specified are dioxan, CHCl3, CH2Cl2, ClCH2CH2Cl, CCl4, C6H6, C6H5CH3, C6H4(CH3)2, C6H12, Et2O, iPr2O, tetrahydrofuran, and ethylene glycol dimethyl and diethyl ethers. The reaction can also be carried out in aqueous solution. Dehydrating agents specified are KHSO4 and Al2O3. Dehydrohalogenating agents specified are: pyridine, picoline, lutidine, piperidine, quinoline, isoquinoline, quinaldine, N-methyl morpholine, dimethylaniline, benzylamine, methyl pyrrolidone, dimethylcyclohexylamine, triethylamine and tributylamine. The reaction may be carried out at 0-100 DEG C. or in the case of a diisocyanate reaction 100-200 DEG C. This latter reaction may be carried out in the presence or absence of a solvent, e.g. chlorobenzene or o-, m-, or p-dichlorobenzene. The products may be flame proof.
