Abstract

[Also in Divisions B1, B7, F2 and G1] The degree of compaction achieved by the action of a vibrating member R on material with which it is in contact has been shown to depend at any moment during the vibratory action on the length l of the major axis of the elliptical locus of a point on the member R and is assessed by measuring with a unit T at least one value related to l and producing therefrom a signal proportional to l which can be used to obtain a reading of the degree of compaction on a meter M and, when a preset value is reached, to provide a signal to light a lamp L and, if desired, to control the action of member R. The unit T may comprise two piezoelectric accelerometers responsive in mutually perpendiculars directions whose outputs are combined and integrated to obtain the instantaneous amplitude from which a peak reading meter M derives the required maximum values corresponding to the length l. Alternatively a single omnidirectional transducer can be used. In the travelling vibratory roller shown, Fig. 2, a motor E drives an out-of-balance shaft S in bearings 110 in a roll R mounted by bearings J, J<SP>1</SP>, having flanges 112 attached by rubber-in-shear mountings 113 to flanges 114 attached to the frame F. A variable speed transmission system 100 is arranged in the drive from the motor E to the roll R, whose speed may be automatically changed when a predetermined degree of compaction is acquired. The invention may also be applied to a vibratory poker, beam or limpet used in consolidating freshly poured concrete.
