Abstract

1,071,985. Automatic controls for packaging machines. A. SCHMERMUND. Feb. 16, 1966 [March 12, 1965], No. 10481/65. Heading B8C. [Also in Division H3] Electric impulses, fed to terminals 12, 13 of an impulse delay arrangement as a result of a fault developing in a cigarette-packaging machine, eventually cause an electric circuit connected to output terminals 16, 17 to be closed, thereby exerting a control effect on the machine, e.g. to eject an imperfect block or packet. A shaft 2 of the machine rotates carrying a cam 2 against which a plunger 3 is spring- urged. A switch 4, spring-urged against the plunger 3, has contacts 5, 6 which connect a terminal 7 alternately to conductors 8, 9. Terminals 7, 12 are connected to a D.C. supply, the terminal 12 being connected to a further conductor 11. The contacts of relays A-Z are initially open, the contact al of relay A being closed when an impulse is fed to terminals 12, 13. The relay B, which is thereby connected to the conductor 8, is energized when contact 5 of the switch 4 closes. Contacts b1 and b2 of the relay B are then closed; contact b1 connects relay C, while contact b2 holds relay B when relay A is de-energized after the impulse ceases. The opening of contact al of relay A is delayed by means of a resistor 14 and capacitor 15. Relay C is energized through conductors 9, 11 when the contact 6 of switch 4 closes. The sequence continues until the circuit connected to terminals 16, 17 is finally closed. A next impulse may be applied to the terminals 12, 13 when the contact 5 of switch 4 is open and before the relay Z has responded to the first impulse, thereby a number of impulses may travel simultaneously through the chain of relays. Instead of feeding impulses to terminals 12, 13, they may be fed direct to any one of the relays, e.g. relay D as shown, thereby shortening the delay effect. The control circuit may be connected to a third contact of any one of the relays, e.g. relay J as shown, instead of to the terminals 16, 17. Photo-electric relays (see Division H3) (as at A), Fig. 2, each comprising two electric lamps (al, a2) may be used with a light-sensitive resistor (a3) in a light-tight chamber (a4). Alternatively, each relay A-Z may comprise an electronic relay, e.g. a coldcathode tube, or it may comprise a transistor. The electromagnetic relays may be microrelays. The cam 1 may be replaced by an electric synchronizing arrangement.
