Abstract

1,071,911. Lasers. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Nov. 7, 1963 [Nov. 26, 1962], No. 43948/63. Heading H1C. [Also in Divisions G4 and H4] A plane-polarized light beam from an optical maser 1 is rotated through 90 degrees by a Faraday rotator or between half-wave plates 2, 7 . . . according to the presence or absence of a digital input 31, 32 . . . and the rotated beam is displaced by a discrete step according to the plane of polarization with respect to a birefringent crystal 6, 11 ... Crystals 11, 6 have optic axes in plane YZ and crystals 21, 16 have optic axes in plane XZ, the widths of each set of crystals increasing geometrically towards the maser 1 to provide a 1: 1 correspondence between the input binary signals and the output position of the light beam on matrix 22. The beam is rotated using a Faraday rotator or half-wave plates in which a voltage is applied to grids 4, 5 disposed on both sides of a potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystal with normal optic axis on the Z axis and induced optic axis in the XY plane. The deflected beam may be used to sense or to perforate record cards, or for television display &c.
