Abstract

1,071,803. Container closures; containers. BEACON PLASTIC & METAL PRODUCTS Inc. June 30, 1964 [May 4, 1964], No. 27034/64. Headings B8P and B8T. A container closure assembly includes two members interconnected by means comprising a resilient twistable body serving both as a pivot and torsion spring, so that when one member is moved from a predetermined position relative the other the said body will automatically return the members to the predetermined position. In Fig. 2, a cover 130 of a receptacle 110 has a skirt 125 and a central depending pintle 115 engaging within a twistable and resilient socket 113 upstanding from the receptacle base. Rotation of the cover about the pintle axis to allow the dispensing of pills 140 from a part 119 of the receptacle stresses the socket, and on releasing the cover it returns to the closed position. The base and socket may be integrally moulded of polypropylene and the cover of polystyrene. The pintle may, alternatively, be twistable and resilient and its ends received within rigid sockets integral with the cover and base. In Fig. 9, not shown, the opening 321 of a screw cap 323 is closed by a cover 314 hinged to the cap by a pintle 315 non- rotatably received in a socket bore 341. When the cover is turned to expose the opening the pintle is stressed, and a detent in the cap may extend into an opening in the cover to hold the parts in the open position. In Fig. 12, not shown, outlet apertures 426 and 421 in a cover 414 and screw-cap 423 respectively are brought into alignment by stressing a resilient pintle 415; the pintle may be upstanding from the screw-cap. In a modification the pintle and its associated parts are rigid and the depression into which it fits is flexible and resilient. A dispenser 20, Fig. 16 (not shown), with an open top and side is normally closed by an L-shaped cover having laterally extending twistable and flexible opposed projections engaged non- rotatably in aligned openings 34; when the cover is raised the projections are stressed. Modifications are described in which the dispenser and cover have separate hinge pins of resilient twistable material. In Figs. 24 and 25 (not shown) a dispenser has a discharge opening 140, circumferentially spaced from two groups of openings 142 and 144. A rotary cover 152 with an opening 158 is attached to the dispenser by an integral depending body 162 of resilient and twistable material tightly engaged by a threaded cap 164 having a lateral projection 168. Projections 146 of triangular cross-section depend from the dispenser top wall and are arranged so that the cover may be turned, despite the lateral projections, to bring its opening 158 near to one of the openings 140, 142 and 144. In this position the projection 168 engages a vertical wall of a projection 146 and in order to complete the aligning of the opening 158 with the desired opening in the dispenser the cover is turned still further and the body 162 is stressed. In Fig. 29 (not shown) a screw cap has openings 219, 220 normally closed by the threaded neck of the container 212. A twistable and resilient body 216 includes a transverse member 217 engaged between pairs of ribs 214 in the neck. The cap is unscrewed to open by engaging a finger piece 218, and on release the resilience of the body 216 returns the cap to its closed position.
