In apparatus for the cooling and/or heating of specimens for use in electron microscopy a specimen carrying plate 7 is resiliently mounted on a shaft 8 by means of a helical spring 13 to permit of limited axial displacement and limited tilting of the plate in relation to the shaft, the shaft being axially displaceable, and also tiltable and rotatable, to bring the plate into con tact with a heating or cooling body. Alternatively, the heating or cooling body may be moved into contact with the plate. The helical spring may be replaced by a star-shaped dished spring or by a plurality of compression springs distributed over the periphery of the flange 9 or the flange itself may constitute a spring or flexible washers may be used instead of springs.
