A guard for the exposed part of the band 14 of a band cutter comprises a pair of parallel members 17, 18 pivotally mounted on a supporting block 23 and having a pair of upright arms 19 lying adjacent the band 14 and rounded base portions 21 which are adapted to rest on a cloth 15 being cut. A spindle 26 connecting the ends of the members 17, 18 acts as a counterweight. The members 17, 18 are preferably made of transparent plastics material but may be formed of metal rods. In a modification, the members 17, 18 converge towards the base portions 21.
