Abstract

A shoe stiffener is made from a mixture comprising polyolefin and particulate material, said particulate material having an affinity for adhesive and being exposed at at least one surface of the stiffener. The polyolefin may be a copolymer of ethylene and ethyl acrylate and the particulate material may be short fibrous material e.g. wood flour, or chopped cotton or viscose. The stiffener may be made by casting or extruding a block of the material, having an outline shape corresponding to that of the stiffener and then slicing stiffeners from the block, or by splitting a single sheet of the material in two and then die-cutting stiffeners from the split sheets.
