Abstract
<PICT:1070397/C6-C7/1> A surface treating appliance, particularly for cleaning painted surfaces or polishing stained metallic surfaces, comprises a pair of electrodes 12, 13 having working faces e.g. horizontal flanges 14, 15 adapted to be presented to the surface being treated, preferably facing adjacent areas, and covering each electrode working face a layer of absorbent material, such as asbestos wash cloth 16, wetted with an electrolyte liquid, e.g. sodium carbonate or bicarbonate which liberates alkali when electrolyzed by applying a potential difference between the electrodes. As shown, the appliance may include an applicator portion 10, containing the above electrolytic body, from which a handle portion 11 extends obliquely, containing a reservoir 25 for the electrolyte liquid and battery 30. The electrodes e.g. of Ni or Al may be insulated by material 17, surrounded by a plastic housing 18, through which a plastic dispensing tube 19 extends to convey liquid from the reservoir, e.g. via nozzle 26 and past valve 20, to the cloth 16. Alternatively, the appliance may include a suction nozzle adapted for connection to suction means see Fig. 3 (not shown).
