Abstract

A composition for the prevention of porcine iron deficiency anaemia comprises 30-65% by weight ferrous fumarate, 30-60% by weight ferrous sulphate, a binding agent and a sweetening agent. Molasses and sugar may be the binding and/or sweetening agents and preferably up to 10% by weight of spray-dried cane molasses is present. Up to 3% by weight ferric oxid may be present in the composition to provide increased palatability. Up to 2% by weight of a lubricant may also be present, examples include mineral oil, edible fats and oils, Mg, Ca or K stearate and Mg palmitate. The composition is in the form of a compressed block, which the piglets can lick or chew, which is prepared by incorporating up to 15% by weight of water with the composition and then moulding at a pressure of 5,000-25,000 p.s.i.
