A photographic shutter is provided with a slow speed escapement releasably coupled to a fast speed escapement and with a speed setting member (not shown), the setting of the latter rotating a cam 2 coupled to the driving lever 5 of the fast speed escapement and rotating a shift cam 3 which, in the speed range adjustable only by the fast speed escapement, releases the coupling between the driving segment 6 of the slow speed escapement and the lever 5. When the shutter is tensioned and a slow speed set, the parts take up the position shown. For a different speed the space between the arms 16, 17 of the lever 5 and drive member 18 respectively is different, thus delaying the running down movement of the drive member for a different time. A driving segment 6 connected to a gear retard 12-15 bears against the lever 5 by means of a pin 11. A release member 20 is actuated allowing the member 18 to rotate to release a first locking pawl 22 which thereby frees the shutter opening slide 24 to run down. The arm 17 now strikes the lever 5 which rotates clockwise as shown and drives the gear retard 12-15 through the coupling pin 11. After overcoming the gear retard, the member 18 releases a second locking pawl 23 to release the shutter closing slide 25. For fast speeds, Fig. 2 (not shown), the shift cam (3) is rotated far enough to strike an arm (10) and hence rotate the segment (6) out of contact with lever (5). Hence only the inertia of the driving lever delays the running down of the member 18.
