Cauldrons; surface-heating apparatus; surface treatment with liquid materials. - Relates to portable apparatus for making or repairing road surfaces, and consists in the combination of an air-heating surface with means for forcing or drawing the hot air to a hood or hoods situated over the road surface and means for heating the binding-materials by the hot air and for discharging them on to the road surface within the hod. A suitable filling-material such as sand, chippings, clinker dust, or Portland cement may be heated by the current of hot air and blown upon the road surface. In the form shown, the apparatus comprises an air blower b connected with an air-heating furnace d, the hot air passing between a tar-tank e and a container g for the filler to an outlet pipe h connected to a hood j, the whole being supported on a vehicle framework a adapted for propulsion or trailing. Fig. 4 shows a section through the tar and sand heaters. The air blown through the furnace d passes either directly through a main hot-air trunk f to the outlet h or, by operating dampers k<1>, it may be diverted into a flue k passing around the tar-tank e. Cold air may be admitted through a damper r. The outlet pipe h is connected to the vertex of a hood j, of square pyramidal form, shown in section in Fig. 5. The tar is forced from the tank e by air pressure produced by a pump m and is sprayed within the hood by a pipe l. The filler in the container g is moved by a conveyer n to the outlet h and, by operating a valve q, is blown by the hot air into a passage o delivering inside or outside the hood according to the position of a flap o'. The bottom of the passage o is provided with grooves to distribute the filler.
