Abstract
1,069,349. Conveying liquefied gas. M. DIMENTBER. Feb. 8, 1966, No. 5449/66. Heading F4P. Transfer of natural hydrocarbon gas from a source to a distant receiving station is effected by liquefying and sub-cooling at a plant (2), Fig. 1 (not shown), forcing it by a pump (7) through thermally insulated pipelines (8) buried below ground and leading to a pumping station (30) where the liquid is recooled and repressurized and forced through further pipelines (8) to the receiving station where the liquid gas is either transferred through a valved pipe (92) to a tanker ship or is revaporized and fed to a gas distribution system. At a pumping station the liquid gas is throttled at (11), Fig. 2 (not shown) into a flash chamber (12), a portion of the resulting cooled vapour is withdrawn through a valved pipe (32) compressed at (33), liquefied in an ethylene-cooled condenser (35) and fed through a pipe (36) to a chamber (22) where it is mixed with liquid withdrawn from chamber (12) by a pump (17) delivering through a pipe (18) and spray (19). The resulting sub-cooled liquid is then forced by a pump (21) through further pipe-lines (8) to the next pumping station or to the terminal. Compressor (33) and pumps (17, 21) are driven by gas engines (37, 16, 20) respectively and which are controlled by means (13) responsive to temperature in chamber (12), means (14) responsive to liquid level in chamber (12) and means (23) responsive to liquid level in chamber (23). Fuel, for the engines (37, 16, 20) and for engines (37 to 40) driving of a conventional cascade refrigeration system is withdrawn from vapour pipe (29) through a pipe (58) and heated exchangers (59, 63). At the terminal liquefied gas when vaporized passes through a pipe (72) to a vaporizer (73) warmed by a burner (76) in a branch (75) of pipe (72). The resulting vapour is further warmed in an exchanger (83) heated by a burner (86) and passed into a distributing pipe (70). A mixture of liquefied gases, e.g. methane and propane, may be transmitted through the pipe-lines, the propane being subsequently reheated at vaporizer (73). The pipe-lines (8) may also be used to transmit different liquids separated by impervious plugs.
