Abstract

1,069,309. Sewing machines. L. & L. MANUFACTURING Inc. April 15, 1966 [April 20, 1965], No. 16725/66. Heading D1G. A sewing machine comprises means for receiving and yieldably pulling a thread chain in advance of a work piece, said means being arranged, after the insertion of a few stitches in the work piece, to move the thread chain across the line of stitching, whereby the thread chain is incorporated in the stitched seam, said means then returning to its initial position. As shown, a hollow horizontal arm 30 communicates at its inner end with a suction duct 35, and is movable counterclockwise about the axis of the latter, upon energisation of a rotary solenoid 32, against the bias of a spring 33, from an initial position A in advance of the stitching print of an overedge sewing machine to a final position B to the rear of the stitching point. The outer end of arm 30 extends downwards and has an opening adapted to seize the thread chain 25 extending rearwardly from a previously-sewn workpiece. When a fresh workpiece presented to the machine obscures a photocell PEI, the machine starts and continues to run until the workpiece obscures a photocell PE2, whereby the driving motor is de-energised and a brake coil is energised to stop the machine. The presser foot is raised, after a time delay, to actuate a lever 38 for actuating a limit switch L55. Solenoid 32 is thereby energised for moving arm 30 to position B, where arm 30 actuates a limit switch L54. The presser foot is thereby lowered and the machine is re-started, whereby the thread chain 25 is incorporated in the seam until the usual edge-trimming blades 22, 23 sever the thread chain, the free end of the latter then being conveyed to duct 35. Arm 30 which is retained in position B by time delay means, then returns to position A. When a sewn workpiece obscures a photocell PE3 the machine will stop, unless a fresh workpiece has subsequently obscured photocell PE1.
