Abstract

Aqueous aluminium sulphate containing as impurities iron, chromium and at least one of titanium and zirconium is purified, in a similar manner as is described in the parent Specification, by (1) adding chlorine to convert Fe2+ and Cr3+ in the aqueous aluminium sulphate to Fe3+ and Cr6+ respectively, (2) adding a water insoluble amine anion exchanger to the oxidized product to remove the impurities, (3) separating and recovering the aqueous aluminium sulphate, (4) reactivating the amine anion exchanger by contacting it with aqueous sulphuric acid (\sF 6% conc.), (5) then treating it to reduce the sulphate content to 25% or less based on the amine anion exchanger (6) recycling the treated anion exchanger to step (2). The chlorine added is equivalent to the Fe2+ and Cr3+. The amine anion exchanger used in step (2) which generally has a molecular weight of 200 to 600 may be lauryl trialkylamine and is dissolved in a petroleum distillate or organic solvent. The conc. of exchanger is 3 to 15%. In step (2) aqueous/organic volume ratio is 1 : 1.5 to 1 : 2.5. In step (4) the aqueous H2SO4/organic volume ratio is 1 : 6 to 1 : 12. The reactivated amine from step (4) may be treated with a 10-20% solution of sodium carbonate to remove chloride conc. Step (5) may be carried out by washing with water. The H2SO4 used in step (4) may contain ferrous sulphate. Step (1) is carried out at 45-60 DEG C. or at 150-177 DEG C. under superatmospheric pressure.
