Abstract

A granular polymer composed of units derived from ethylene sulphide alone or with other monomers is formed by polymerizing a first monomer charge, comprising predominantly ethylene sulphide and containing a catalyst, to form a first polymer which is made into dense particles and incorporated as a seed catalyst in a second monomer charge composed of ethylene sulphide, or a mixture of monomers containing a major proportion of ethylene sulphide, and polymerizing the mixture to form a second polymer. Monomers which may be copolymerized with ethylene sulphide include other cyclic alkylene sulphides and their derivatives, thioglycidyl ethers and esters, alkylene oxides and other cyclic ethers and acetals, alkylene imines, olefines, dienes and other vinyl compounds. As catalyst may be used the reaction product of a compound of the formula R2M (R is an alkyl or aryl group and M is Zn, Cd or Hg) and a compound having an active hydrogen atom or carbon disulphide, carbonyl sulphide, oxygen or sulphur. Other catalysts are those described in Specifications 1,059,490, 1,059,491 and 1,059,492. The preferred catalyst is the reaction product of diethyl zinc and water. The polymerization reaction may be carried out in bulk or in an inert solvent or emulsion or in the vapour phase. Uses.-For moulding into pipe, film, filament, rods, bars, gears, pumps or valves.
