Abstract

106,892. Morris & Whitham, and Allison, J. A. July 12, 1916. Flanging g l a s s t u b e s for electric lamps. - In a ma chine for automati cally flanging glass tubes for use in the manufacture of electric lamps, the tubes are successively fed into and gripped by a rotary chuck, softened by flames and operated on by a flanging device. The tubes i within a magazine h are successively fed by a reciprocating slide h<1> into the path of a plunger j which pushes them through a hollow chuck f so as to have a portion of the tube protruding from spring jaws g<2>, the rotation of the chuck being temporarily arrested by the disengagement of a clutch n during the insertion of the tube. Burners q<1> project a flame upon the end of the tube, and a rotating former y carried on one end of a spindle w' is moved against the softened glass and is caused by connexions y' to assume the position shown in Fig. 6 so as to produce the required flange. The burners q<1> tilt away from the tube and bring an air nozzle q<2> into action to cool the formed flange. The succeeding tube pushes the flanged tube out of the chuck whence it falls down a shoot z.
