Abstract

1,068,831. Wrapping machines; applying adhesive tapes. TAPE ENGINEERING Ltd. Oct. 7, 1963 [Oct. 9, 1962], No. 38184/62. Headings B8C and B8F. Regardless of the diameter of a cylindrical article A, Fig. 6, it is located in a machine in two successive positions in one of which a generator lies on the line E<SP>1</SP>, and in the second of which the axis lies on the line E<SP>2</SP>. In the wrapping machine shown the article is first gauged at C as described in Specification 1,058,633, and, as in that Specification, a wall J and a stop G<SP>5</SP>, and optionally also a wall K, are correspondingly adjusted in position. At the same time, and by the same mechanism, an inclined surface F<SP>5</SP> is moved horizontally to co-operate with the stop G<SP>5</SP>, when this has been lowered, to locate the article in its second position (broken lines in Fig. 2, not shown). In the first of the two positions a web L is wrapped around the article, cut off and sealed as described in Specification 1,058,633. In the second position the projecting ends of the wrapper are pleated, as described in Specification 966,121, and labels are applied to the ends. As the wrapped article moves from the upper position to the lower, the wrapper may be held around it by bands (W) (Fig. 13, not shown) passing over the stop G5 and tensioned by springs (W<SP>2</SP>). The folding members O wrapping one side of the wrapper about the article A, as in Specification 1,058,633, may terminate in spring members passing over the wall J and through a hole in it to an anchor O<SP>3</SP>. The invention may be applied to filling, labelling or printing cans or bottles, and the articles handled may, in such applications, be disposed with their axes vertical instead of horizontal.
