Abstract

1,068,769. Gas turbine engines - starting. STAL-LAVAL TURBIN A.B. Feb. 11, 1966 [April 20, 1965], No. 6116/66. Heading F1G. The invention relates to a method of starting a gas turbine engine of the kind comprising a low pressure compressor and a high pressure compressor in series flow and driven by a low pressure turbine and a high pressure turbine respectively. The engine is started by means of a jet of air under pressure discharging into the air duct between the two compressors, the pressure air duct being located centrally within the air duct with its outlet nozzle passing through a valve disposed across the air duct and comprising a pair of flaps which when the starting air jet is operative are closed so as to prevent the back flow of pressure air introduced by the jet, and which when the engine starts are opened so as to allow air flow from the low pressure compressor to the high pressure compressor. In the embodiment shown air flows from the L.P. compressor, not shown, through the duct 1 to the H.P. compressor 2. The engine is started by means of air under pressure introduced into the duct 1 through a nozzle 3. A valve device comprising a pair of pivotally mounted flaps 5, 6 is disposed across the duct 1 at the outlet of the nozzle 3, the flaps being moved to the closed position indicated in chain dot lines by means of the actuators 9, 10 when the starting device is operative, and to the open position shown in full lines once the engine starts. The flaps are recessed at 7, 8 to permit engagement with the nozzle 3.
