Abstract

1,068,344. Safety harness. NORRIS BROS. Ltd. Oct. 14, 1963 [Oct. 15, 1962], No. 38999/62. Heading A3V [Also in Divisions B8 and F2] An apparatus for dispensing and locking a safety belt comprises rotatable means upon which the belt is wound, pivoting detent means operable to engage ratchet teeth, and actuating means for the detent means adjustable to any one of a number of positions. The casing 41 houses a drum 40 on which the safety belt is wound. The drum has a disc 43 which supports three pivoting pawls 44 with followers 45 engaging slots in the drum. The casing has an annulus of ratchet teeth 47 with which the pawls co-operate to arrest the drum when the cammed head 48 on a stem 49 supported within the drum is moved by displacement of a bobweight 56, part of which is in contact with a pivoted lever 52 which contacts the end of the stem 49. The bobweight is supported by a plate 57 adjustable on a spindle 53 which extends into the sides of a cap 58 and which pivotally supports the lever 52. The cap is rotatable on the casing to adjust the position of the bobweight. If the casing is used in the vertical position the bobweight directly abuts the end of the stem 49. In an alternative form the bobweight 93 and pawl 96 are mounted on one shaft 86 spaced from another shaft 80 on which the belt is wound and which supports a ratchet wheel 77 with which the pawl co-operates. A belt retracting coiled spring is secured at one end on the shaft 80 and at the other end to the shaft 86. A bolted sleeve surrounding a bush secured to the pawl can be adjusted to vary the position of the pawl. The sleeve is integral with a tappet 98 which counterbalances the pawl. The bobweight is supported by an arm on a support adjustably positioned on splines on the shaft 86. The head of the bobweight abuts the tappet 98. The bobweight is displaced by acceleration, deceleration and change of altitude or direction of the apparatus.
