Abstract

[Also in Division F4] A patient is protected from infection by immersion in a moving column of sterile air or is prevented from passing infection by immersion in a moving column of air which is subsequently sterilized before being returned to the surrounding atmosphere. As illustrated, apparatus for this purpose comprises a canopy 12 connected by a pipe 19 to an air sterilizer 17 and a blower 16. The canopy is provided with a lower plate 14 having air apertures making up approximately one hundredth of its area. An air director 15 surrounds the lower plate. The canopy may be bolted at various points 27 to legs 13. If the blower is operative to blow sterilized air from the canopy, a patient in a bed 11 is protected from infection from the surrounding atmosphere. If the blower is reversed the patient is prevented from communicating infection to the surrounding atmosphere. A curtain may be suspended from the canopy to surround the patient. Another embodiment, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the blower, sterilizer and canopy form a unitary structure of adjustable height which is readily transportable. In a further embodiment, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the canopy is formed by an inflatable plastic bag having a perforated lower surface.
