Abstract

1,068,143. Road traffic signals on vehicles. LEHIGH VALLEY INDUSTRIES Inc. Jan. 27, 1966, No. 3712/66. Heading G4Q. [Also in Division H2] A flasher unit comprising a vane 10 deformed by a thermally expansible pull ribbon 20 and carrying a movable contact 21 co-operating with a fixed contact 22, is characterized in that the heater circuit for the pull ribbon is completed by a pair of normally open contacts 18 and 40 controlled by a relay coil 35 in series with the load so that the heating rate, and therefore the flash rate, is independent of the load. To reduce variations of flash rate due to variations of supply voltage, the unit may include a heating coil 65 connected across the flasher unit and controlling a bimetal element 61 so that if the voltage rises a resistance 60 is included in the pull ribbon heating circuit. In Fig. 13 the pull ribbon is heated by a surrounding heating coil 25, but it may be heated partly or wholly by passage of current through it and it may be insulated from the vane 10 at one end. The load may comprise turn-indicating lamps and the circuit may include a dimming resistance (55, Fig. 1, not shown) which is normally shortcircuited and is brought into circuit when the vehicle lights are switched on. A pilot lamp may be connected across each lamp (Fig. 14) or across the turn-indicating switch (Fig. 16) or between terminal 18 and earth.
