Blocks 13 of margarine being transported on the upper run of an endless belt 11 of a wrapping machine are caught up by flights 23 depending from faster moving endless chains 15. Irregularly placed blocks 13 on the belt 11 are thus brought into precise position for transfer by the flights 23 into pockets formed by members (38) (Figs. 4 and 6, not shown) on a conveyer (37) of a cartoning machine. The flights 23 are initially held up clear of the blocks 13 as they pass from the upper to the lower run of the chains 15, by the action of a guide (42) (Figs. 1 and 3, not shown). Each flight 23 is freely pivoted on a shaft 22 carried by brackets 20 respectively mounted on the chains 15. Also pivoted on the shaft 22 is an arm 27 carrying a roller 28 engaging a cam track 29 which extends around the whole run of the chains 15. Rigid with the arm 27 is a latch plate 32 which carries a latch 34 adapted to engage a pin 36 carried by an extension arm 24 of the flight 23. Thus when the guide 42 permits the flight 23 to fall (from the position of Fig. 5) into a depending block-engaging position (Fig. 6, not shown), the pin 36 is engaged behind a nose 43 of the latch 34. This prevents rearward movement of the flight 23. The latter is maintained vertical during the transfer of the block (Fig. 6, not shown), even though the chains are passing up round their return sprockets, by the action of the roller 28 and cam track 29. There is a second conveyer belt 12 side-by-side with the belt 11 and alternate flights 23 are aligned respectively with the two belts 11 and 12.
