Abstract

1,067,622. Sheathing cylindrical bodies. PIRELLI S.p.A. Feb. 1, 1965 [Jan. 31, 1964], No. 4254/65. Heading F2P. A continuous strip, or a number of such strips, of lenticular section and of a thermoplastic material is extruded and helically applied directly on to a cylindrical body to be sheathed. The convolutions of the strip or strips overlap at the edges thereof and successive layers of the strip or strips are wound in opposite directions. The apparatus for applying the strips comprises a slide 2 carrying a chuck 5, for supporting one end of the body 6, and slidable along guides 4 and actuated by a hand wheel 9 operating through a gear-box 8 the first gear of which engages a rack 7, and a frame 10 carrying a chuck 11 to support the other end of the body and rotated through gears by a motor mounted on a carriage 13, reciprocable on the guides 4 by an endless chain drive, is an extruder 27 actuated by a variable-speed motor 29. The strips of thermoplastic material are extruded and wound on to the body 6 as the carriage is moved to and fro along the axis of the body and bonded together by the pressure exerted thereon by a pair of diametrically opposite and vertically adjustable rollers mounted on a support 34. The sheathing is subjected to a grinding operation to provide a smooth surface thereon, and, if of uncured rubber, the body is introduced into a horizontal vulcanizing unit. Alternatively, the slide 2 carries rollers to support the body in place of the chuck 5.
