Abstract

1,067,381. Moulding snap fasteners. UNITED-CARR Inc. March 23, 1965 [March 27, 1964], No. 12252/65. Heading B5A. In a method of moulding a strip of snap fastener members, a strip of plastics material is simultaneously heated and embossed and then each embossment is shaped to provide means for engaging a co-operating snap fastener member. The strip may then be fed to heat-sealing apparatus where the individual fastener members are heat-sealed to a garment. A strip of vinyl plastics (16) is fed on to a lower die (12), and a punch (14) descends carried by a plate (1) which is connected to a high-frequency generator. The plate is simultaneously energized whereby the punch acts as an electrode so that the plastics strip is di-electrically heated and is thus embossed by the punch and die the embossment comprising an upstanding annular ridge (20) in its upper surface formed by a corresponding cavity in the punch, and a cavity, formed by a corresponding raised portion in the die, in its lower surface within the confines of the annular ridge. The plate then ascends, the strip moves on and the operation is repeated. The embossed strip moves on to a support (15) under a set of punches fixed to the plate (1) through an insulator (11). The first punch (5) blanks out the portion of the embossment within the confines of the annular ridge and provides a central aperture (21) having a peripheral lip (22). Punches (6), (7), (9) and (10) serve to position the strip and a cutter (8) outlines the socket fastener member leaving a tab (23) joining adjacent sockets. Each fastener now comprises an annular ridge (20) surrounded by a flange (25). The strip is then fed on to a hexagonal rotating head (8a) to be heat-sealed to a garment (24). When the socket is in the lowermost position on the head, the head descends and is simultaneously energized. The flange (25) is pressed against the garment, the remainder of the socket being located in a cavity in the head (8a), and the fastener is dielectrically heat-sealed to the garment.
