Spigot-and-socket joints held by cement and the like.-In a joint for pipes, conduits &c. of the kind comprising a socket a adapted to fit over the ends b, c of the pipes and into which a packing or binding-agent h is run and held against spreading by means of linings or rings, the linings or rings f, g are fixed in the socket before the pipe ends are inserted, being retained in position by cement or by providing grooves or ribs in the socket. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the socket a is fitted with two rings f of resilient material, such as india-rubber, abutting against a central rib e, and near the ends with two rings g of rope &c. which may be fixed in the grooves by cement. On account of the resilience of the rings f, a slight sagging of the pipes may occur without impairing the efficiency of the joint. In a modification, Fig. 4, the two rings f are replaced by a single ring f<1> located in a groove in the socket a, the central rib e being dispensed with. A temporary partition j may be fitted in the falling-hole i so as to ensure that the material shall flow into the socket in one direction only.
