Abstract

1,066,642. Wick burners. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. May 20, 1964 [May 25, 1963 (2)], No. 20835/64. Heading F4T. An oil burner comprises a plurality of main wicks 37 movable vertically in guide tubes 29 by means of a rack 27 and a pinion 23, an auxiliary wick 42 movable vertically from a retracted position in an extinguisher tube 40 and adapted to be ignited by an electric heater 54 and to ignite the main wicks 37 and linkage connecting the main wicks, the auxiliary wick and contacts 55 for the electric heater 54 so that when the pinion 23 is rotated to raise the main wicks the auxiliary wick is also raised and the heater 54 is energized. The rack 23 and supporting tubes 38 for the main wicks are secured to a disc 28, and a supporting tube 41 for the auxiliary wick 42 passes through a cutout 48 in the disc 28, but when the disc 28 is raised by the rack the cut-out engages a nut 45 threaded on to the supporting tube 41 and therefore raises the auxiliary wick. The nut 45 has a tongue 44 which extends into a vertical slot in a guide plate 47 and the position of the tip of the auxiliary wick, when raised, can be adjusted by rotating the supporting tube 41 to move the nut. A spring acts between the nut and a cover 12 of an auxiliary fuel reservoir 11 to return the auxiliary wick downwardly. The tips of the main wicks extend into an annular fire tray 32 which contains a glass fibre ignition wick 39 contacting all the main wicks and which has an aperture 50 immediately above the auxiliary wick 42 covered, during burning, by the upper side plate of a U-shaped member 49 freely swingable on one of the wick guide tubes 29 located adjacent the auxiliary wick 42. The cover 49 is connected by a rod 52 to a link plate 19 loosely mounted on the shaft 15 of the pinion 23 but adapted to be rotated by a pin 16 on the shaft engaging an abutment 18 on the link plate. When therefore the shaft is rotated to raise the main wicks and the auxiliary wick, the cover 49 is swung to uncover the aperture 50 and the end of the rod 52 connected to the cover urges the contacts 55 together to energize the electric heater. When the shaft is released, a spring 20 acting on the link plate returns the shaft, and to prevent the main wicks from being forced downwardly too far a brake is associated with the shaft and comprises a U-shaped brake 24 loosely mounted on the shaft and having a lug 25 adapted to engage the rack 27 and an abutment 26 adapted to engage the linkplate 19. The brake 24 is normally tilted by gravity so that the lug 25 is out of engagement with the rack 27 but when the link plate is returned by its spring the brake is caused to rotate and the lug 25 engages and stops the rack. The main wicks are extinguished by rotating the shaft in the opposite direction to draw the wicks into the guide tubes. Two auxiliary burners and two electric heaters therefor may be provided and operated simultaneously by the pinion shaft. The burner is provided with a chimney and is mounted in front of a reflector and is covered by a guard hinged to the reflector.
